Janu Basti

Ayurvedic treatment for your knees

Janu Basti

In this treatment, the knee joint is bathed with warm medicated oil, which can give relief from pain and stiffness associated with many different kinds of knee pain.

The benefits of Janu Bhasti

  • Improves mobility of the knee joint.

  • Increases circulation.

  • Protects the knee joint from age-related changes.

  • Helps to remove stiffness and pain in the Knee joint.

  • Restores the lubricating fluid in the joint.

  • Pacifies aggravated Vata (air & space) in the knee region.

What to expect.

  • You lie on your back on the massage table (there is no massage, in this procedure and I am not a massage therapist). and we will get you comfortable with pillows and blankets.

  • Using chickpea flour or whole wheat flour I will make a dough and shape it into a ring that will be built upon the Knee Joint. The dough ring covers the knee joint.

  • After ensuring the ring is leakproof, the warm oil is slowly poured into it.

  • When the oil cools down, I will squeeze it out with cotton gauze and fresh warm oil will be added again.

  • Please wear older clothing, sometimes the oil escapes. Shorts are best for this treatment.

  • Feel free to bring an eye pillow or covering, or even some earbuds to listen to some soothing music.

  • Some residue from the flour may be left on the knee.

  • This treatment is great for your knee but it is also time for you to sit back and take some time to just relax.

I use a combination of Banyan Botanicals sesame oil and Mahanaryan oil. and chickpea or whole wheat flour for the ring. I prefer chickpea on the knee because it does "stick" better but it is a little harder to clean it off. Wheat flour is generally used for Kati Basti same type of treatment only for your lower back.
